It is finally the school holidays and Pieter is very excited. His parents gave him permission to visit Grandpa Ben for the whole school holiday. Both his parents work and it would be better for Pieter to be with his grandfather than to be home alone all day while his parents work. In any case, there are many interesting things that his grandfather is always busy with and Pieter enjoys doing things together with Grandpa Ben.
Pieter's parents drop him off at Grandpa Ben, stay awhile, and leave for home after they confirmed Pieter agrees to listen to his grandfather and not be naughty. Pieter also had to promise that he would help Grandpa Ben where he could and keep his room and bathroom tidy. Early the next morning, Pieter sees through the open curtain in the bedroom how Grandpa Ben is already busy working in the garden. He jumps out of bed, brushes his teeth, and quickly gets dressed.
Grandpa explained to Pieter what garden tools they need to get started. He shows Pieter the garden fork with which he is busy tossing the bedding. "We are going to use the garden fork now to loosen the soil in the bedding," Grandpa explains patiently. "It is important to remove all the weeds, otherwise it will later compete with the plants for water and nutrition in the soil," Grandpa Ben continued calmly. Pieter takes the garden fork and starts to till a piece of land. He soon realizes that it takes quite some physical exercise to work in the garden.
